Carl Matteson Bio

Carl Matteson’s passion for teaching began in childhood, inspired by his mother, an early childhood educator who ran a daycare from their home. From a young age, Carl enjoyed organizing the other kids to play school and developed a love for sharing knowledge. Although teaching wasn’t his initial career path, his journey into emergency medical services (EMS) began at 15 when he joined his local volunteer ambulance service and took his first emergency medical class. This sparked a lifelong passion for helping others and led him to become a CPR and First Aid instructor during high school. Over the years, Carl combined his love of teaching and emergency medicine, conducting EMS courses, teaching at UVM and VTSU, and providing industry CPR training.

In 2019, Carl’s dream of making education his full-time career became a reality when he accepted a teaching position at the Central Vermont Career Center (CVCC). Now, he has come full circle—guiding students who are the same age he was when he first entered EMS. Carl takes pride in playing many roles for his students, serving not only as their teacher but also as a mentor, coach, advocate, and counselor. Though the challenges of teaching can be demanding, the rewards make it all worthwhile. Watching his students grow, collaborate, and experience “lightbulb moments” reaffirms his commitment to education and his belief in the power of making a difference.
